Copyright, Image Rights and Takedown Requests

Where to report

Use Private requests or Contact and Operator Identification to report copyright, image, privacy or attribution issues. Being depicted in a photograph does not necessarily make you its copyright owner; choose the privacy or image-rights channel when appropriate. We examine notices and applicable exceptions; a complaint alone does not decide ownership. Our general contact is not represented as a registered US DMCA agent unless a verified designation is expressly published here.

Copyright notice

Identify the original work and holder, the exact material and URLs challenged, your name and authority, notification address, telephone and email, and your physical or electronic signature. For a US DMCA notice, include a good-faith statement that the use is not authorized by the holder, agent or law; state that the information is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act for the holder of the exclusive right. Consider lawful licenses and exceptions. Knowingly material misrepresentations may carry liability.

Review, removal and repeated infringement

We examine sufficiently specific notices promptly and act expeditiously where applicable law requires removal or restriction. We normally notify the affected contributor, explain the reason and provide a review route. We limit disclosure to what the process legally needs. Our policy permits termination of accounts responsible for repeated infringement in appropriate circumstances, following review of the relevant evidence. It does not require a fixed number of warnings or automatically treat every allegation as an established infringement.

Counter-notices

If a US DMCA removal resulted from mistake or misidentification, a counter-notice must identify the removed material and former location, include your signature, name, address and telephone, a statement under penalty of perjury of a good-faith belief in the mistake, and the jurisdiction and service-of-process consent required by 17 USC 512(g). For a US address this concerns the federal district court for that address; outside the US, a federal district where the provider may be found. You must agree to accept service from the notifier or their agent. Send it using the review channel or contact email, clearly marked as a counter-notice. We may transmit the legally required details to the original claimant.

Where that statutory procedure applies, restoration ordinarily occurs no earlier than 10 and no later than 14 business days after receiving a compliant counter-notice, unless we receive notice of a court action seeking an order to restrain the activity. This is not an automatic restoration promise for material independently prohibited by law or our rules. Ordinary scientific or community appeals do not require US jurisdiction consent. See the US Copyright Office explanation.
