Advertising and analytics choices
GA4 counts anonymous public visits with first-party _ga cookies by default outside the EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland. In those regions, or when the region cannot be verified, analytics cookies require your explicit choice. A saved rejection is respected everywhere. When analytics storage is denied, cookieless requests to Google may include an IP address and technical browser/device information. These limited signals may not appear in GA4 reports. If allowed, GA4 uses first-party _ga cookies and the visit becomes reportable. We store the analytics choice in browser local storage. Advertising consent is separate. The page URL is sent without query parameters or fragments, and the referrer is reduced to its origin. Account, search and private-request pages are excluded. Google Tag Manager and Visitors audience collection remain disabled. Google AdSense runs only for anonymous visitors on selected Science articles, science collections and scientific-domain pages. Account, form and legal pages contain no ad units. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, the AdSense tag waits for a choice in Google’s certified consent interface; choosing Do not consent sends no ad request under the current configuration. Elsewhere, ad code is loaded only when a unit approaches the viewport and remains subject to applicable Google and regional privacy controls.
Analytics cookie choice
You may allow GA4 cookies or continue without them; neither option changes advertising consent. You can change your choice here at any time. Withdrawing it expires accessible _ga cookies on this site, but cannot undo earlier measurements or remove cookies on other domains.
Advertising cookies and local storage
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies or similar storage to serve and measure ads. Google and its partners may select personalized ads from a visitor’s prior visits to FutureSciences or other sites when the visitor’s region and choices permit. Non-personalized ads can still use cookies for frequency capping, aggregated reporting, security and fraud prevention. Google publishes its current advertising-cookie inventory, cookie information and explanation of data used on partner sites. The consent interface stores the choice needed to remember and transmit it.
Your controls
In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, the first visit offers Consent, Do not consent and Manage options. Google adds a privacy-settings link to ad-enabled pages so the choice can be changed later. Where another regional message is shown, use its opt-out control. You may also disable personalized advertising in Google Ads Settings. Browser site-data controls remove accessible storage, but doing so may sign you out or cause a consent choice to be requested again. Silence, scrolling, a preselected checkbox or accepting account terms does not grant advertising consent.
Necessary storage
Drupal may use a session cookie, commonly named SSESS… or SESS…, after an account, authorization, security or form interaction. It maintains the session and protects form submissions; it is not an advertising identifier. Form security and anti-abuse checks may use session storage or server records. Cloudflare may set necessary security cookies when its protections are triggered, under its configuration. Google sign-in takes you to Google only when you choose that action; its authentication cookies are governed by its own information.
Legacy analytics cookies
Earlier visits may have set _ga, _ga_… and _pk_… cookies. The site expires accessible first-party analytics cookies when analytics is denied; requests to the former audience collector remain blocked. A page cannot delete another domain’s cookies or inaccessible HttpOnly cookies. To remove those, use your browser’s site-data controls. Clearing session cookies signs you out.
Security on account and private request forms
Sign-in, registration, password recovery and private request forms use Google reCAPTCHA v3 to assess automated abuse without a visible puzzle. It processes technical device and connection signals, including IP address, and may set the _GRECAPTCHA security cookie. The form checks the token, hostname, action and risk score on the server. This service loads on those forms, not during ordinary reading. A rejected security check does not decide the merits of a request: you can use the email on Contact and Operator Identification instead. Google provides its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. Send questions through Private requests.
